Equipment tracking // a general approach
There are already a number of requests in this forum to enhance the ability to enhance the ability to auto-assign and track the equipment used for activities.
While most suggestions focus on individual use cases (e.g., wheel sets), I propose a more general approach:
Please add different equipment types or a "other equipment" category. This would allow us to track the use of not only a pre-set equipment type (like e.g. wheels) but chains, cassettes, tires, helmets (e.g. UV exposure), smart trainers, etc.
Additionally, please enable us to set default equipment based on activity types, eg. one shoe for running activities and another for cycling activities or a certain piece of equipment (like a smart trainer) only for virtual cycling activities like Zwift or TrainerRoad (e.g. to track the mileage on a cassette).
That said, in a "other equipment" category, please allow multiple items to be "default" (each again referenced to all or only certain activity types) to automatically apply multiple equipment items to an activity or, in general, to apply multiple "other equipment" entries to an activity.

I also asked for something similar to this 6 months ago, and felt like the staff at TrainingPeaks kind of blew me off.
I think it is reasonable to require "adding" the new equipment using the desktop (web page) version; however, on the iphone app I would really like to just be able to view the total mileage on the shoes. Currently on the app you cannot view how many miles are on each shoe. As a point of convenience, I am often selecting which shoes I want to use in the morning based on their volume, a quick check on the app would be exceptionally helpful. It seems like it would be a pretty easy thing to add into the app since they're already collecting the data.
Adding shoes is performed fairly infrequently, so if it's easier on the programmers to leave this function exclusively on the desktop version -- fine.
Viewing total mileage on all "active" shoes should be really easy to program into the app. This really shouldn't be considered a very big ask.

Although you can select which shoes were worn for a workout, adding new shoes as equipment requires going to the web application.

I like to monitor the miles on my shoes (I have several pairs that I alternate) but don’t often go on my my computer to see it. Would be great to be able to see from the app which I look at every day.
