Add Dedicated "Trail Running" Sport Type with Independent Training Zones
Hi TrainingPeaks Support Team,
I am writing to suggest a feature enhancement regarding sport type classifications and threshold zone management within TrainingPeaks.
Currently, running activities encompass both road and trail running under a single "Run" category. However, the biomechanical and physiological demands of trail running—due to technical terrain, continuous elevation changes, and foot strike variability—differ significantly from road running.
Because of these differences, key metrics such as heart rate distribution, pace (even Grade Adjusted Pace), and running power do not translate directly between road and trail environments. Having a unified set of zones for both disciplines skews threshold metrics, normalized grading, and training stress calculations (rTSS).
I would like to request:
Dedicated Sport Category: Adding "Trail Running" as an independent sport/activity type across the platform.
Independent Zone Configuration: Allowing athletes and coaches to set individual threshold values (Heart Rate, Pace, and Power) specifically for Trail Running, separate from Road Running.
Automated Sync & Filtering: Updating platform analytics and device sync options to categorize trail activities automatically and calculate training loads accurately.
This distinction would greatly improve individualization, load management, and data accuracy for endurance athletes and coaches operating in off-road environments.
Thank you for your time and for continuously improving the platform.
Best regards,
