WORLD: Terrain - Complete stylised graphics rewrite
OK, someone had to say it.
The graphics on TPV were always placeholders. When the resource is in place, they should be re-built from the ground up.
My preference would be to go for a stylised low-polygon approach, which allows for scalable graphics across the wide range of hardware options, with flexibility for cool animations and effects - it's also different to the other platforms out there. Whatever is chosen, it should have a consistent style.
I've attached some examples for reference.

Agree. These graphics look like they’re from a 1980s Nintendo console. Absolute garbage!
Agree with others. Don’t need fake or video game like fake stuff or even landmarks. But want it to feel like it looks like in real life (or at least close to it).
This is especially important for people training for a full Ironman event, because if you’re on an indoor trainer for 5+ hours, you don’t wanna feel even worse about being indoors than it already feels. There is a psychological benefit to it looking realistic for some people, game-like for others.
Re: boss’s comment… that’s a terrible reason. Uninterrupted UX streaming experience is expected table stakes. You don’t nail that and you won’t have people ride more than 3x’s. If it looks like garbage - which it does - I’d bet people will give you a month. Maybe two. If it’s cheaper. Or maybe that’s your target audience. People willing to compromise for a lower price.

The debate about high-resolution or photorealistic graphics is irrelevant when assessing the true quality of a product. In our specific case, many users, especially those who previously used platforms like Rouvy or RGT, have clearly expressed their preference: they value graphic fluidity over detail. Our strategy focuses on optimizing the use of computer graphic resources, reducing unnecessary load, and almost completely eliminating critical issues such as disconnections caused by excessive graphic demands.
Since its launch, TPV's success has been based on offering a fair and highly configurable solution. Providing a version with simpler but efficient graphics ensures that the computer's performance focuses on what really matters: enhancing the athlete's experience and performance. It's crucial to emphasize that TPV is not a game but a virtual training platform designed to prioritize user benefits.
The main objective is clear: to empower the athlete, not the graphics. In the end, complex graphics do not bring any tangible improvement to their performance. Instead, fluidity and an uninterrupted experience are essential to ensuring a positive interaction. It might even be beneficial to reduce textures to a minimum to maximize the focus on technical performance.
Investing in a more complex graphic environment would not only make the software heavier, slower, and more expensive to develop and maintain but also unnecessarily increase the final price. This would force users to have more powerful computers just to perform the same activity: pedaling. Therefore, simplifying graphics not only enhances the user experience but also aligns with our vision of accessibility, efficiency, and functionality. -

I took a poll on a virtual cycling podcast discord thread, and something like 60% of people NOT riding on TPV said it is because of the bad graphics.

Please factor in those who do not want to buy the latest GPU in order to ride indoors. I currently use an old gaming laptop. No issues at the moment with TPV. MyWhoosh is an example of what NOT to do. Too many npcs, flags, signs, screens, trees, lights, decorations ...
On the lowest settings it looks horrible. On higher setting I can use my GPU to heat the room. It might look better then, but all the distracting elements make me want to turn it off. -

I would like to see some street signs with road names or something to clearly define the road and region you are entering
Sign posts at the intersections would be nice and road signs stating you are entering a new spot in the map could also be nice
I think defining the locations more would help people more clearly understand and talk about the map

I prefer photo realism as well, BUT as long as we don’t go too far into the cartoon such that we have dragons and dinosaurs-I’ll consider it a win 👍🏻
My preference is “keep it realistic” - whether that means photorealistic or just reasonable scenery, I’m good with that

I find TPV is working well for my needs but the graphics are very basic and way behind the quality in Zwift. I haven’t tried all the routes on TPV yet but the imagery needs to be significantly improved and greater variety introduced (including both urban and village and rural environments that better resemble actual environments).

Yes please. but keep the gaming thing away. Go for the real look. I to would buy whatever GPU to run the game. Let graphics be like the physics...as close to the real thing.

A wolf or coyote scampering across the road ahead might be reason to hold attention. A whale doing a splash out in the distant waters. An eagle grabbing a fish for supper. Just a few ideas - nothing too frequent, perhaps seldom is better.

Ich war ganz kurz beim fahren aber die unruhige Asphaltstraße ist mir Sofort negativ aufgefallen in combination mit die grasfleche sehr störend.

Would be nice to have a little more scenery assets in the world. Some trees, plants etc. It's a bit barren at present.

I would vote for photo realism. I understand that would require some devices to have to dial back, but personally I’d buy whatever graphics card needed to get as close to realistic and possible. I feel like the cartoonish graphics create a certain amount of mental fatigue. If you’re looking at a tree your brain wants to see a tree, and if it doesn’t it has to spend energy translating what it thinks it’s seeing.

Please improve the views on the climbing island to actual scenery. Personally, I spend 6mo of the year staring at white and brown scenery IRL. An attraction of Zwift in comparison to TPV is that there is colour, and greenery everywhere. It helps with the SAD.
