Add Paddle Sports (Not as subtype for Rowing)
This is a re-post in response to the addition of Sport Subtypes.
Rowing uses very different metrics. Most paddle sports use, Speed in mph and miles for distance. Here is a direct contrast
Speed: Rowing sec/500m | Paddle Sports MPH
Distance: Rowing Meters | Paddling miles
Average Race distance: Rowing 200m | Paddle Sports 5 miles to 40+
With this update, none of my athlete get value out of the metrics, because we have no concept of how fast a 3:38 500m pace is. I am requiring all of my athletes re categorize it to custom so I can see the appropriate formatted data.
We would be better off if you used Cycling and added paddling sports as a subtype there.
Speed: both use mph
Distance: Both use Miles
Cadence: Paddling sports require strokes per minute which is similar to cycling cadence. I would imagine they are on the same channel in the garmin API
Power: both use power (new to paddle sport, but starting to be adopted).
Also to note, your competitor Final Surge, has already addressed this for the outrigger community by creating a sub sport for cycling, which includes "OC1" and "OC6." With OC1 standing for a 1 person outrigger canoe, and oc6 standing for a 6 person outrigger canoe. I assume they do it in cycling because the metrics are the same, as I mentioned above. Everyone cycles to cross train though! So it is not ideal to have our paddling metrics and cycling metrics combined. Adding paddling as a sub sport of cycling would be better than rowing, but is still not ideal which is why I believe it is best as it's own sports type.
Can I encourage the team to revisit all sub sports in Rowing? They just don't make sense to have rowing metrics applied to them.
Original Ask:
Add Paddle Sports
I would like to see paddle sprots added as a workout type. This workout type would be able to cover
Outrigger Paddling
Standup paddleboard
K1
C1
Kayaking
Canoeing
Dragon Boat
Whitewater Rafting
Surf Ski
Paddleboarding
Training Peaks is used for more than Bike, Run, Swim. I heard a podcast with Dirk Friel recently and he stated "Other" was the largest growing sport sector currently. Adding a general "Paddle Sport" would allow you to enable a lot of functionality across all of the sport types I listed making TrainingPeaks great for water endurance sports.
The remaining paddle sports have been moved to be under Other.

Hey @tony Viton - thanks for working to try and incorporate paddle sports. I think there is still some work to do to make it actually useable for paddle athletes.
1. Make a "Paddling" workout type with subcatagories:
- SUP
- OC1
- OC2
- OC6
- Prone
- Surfski
- Kayak
- C1 (I don't know all the official C designations, but I'm sure they need to be represented as well)
- Canoe
- K1 (and the other K related designations)2. Make either MPH or min/(mile or km) the default speed/pace? Maybe user selectable
3. Report Pa:Hr for all paddling types
4. Track "best times" over distances, like is done for runs
That is my wish list. I'm sure others have different things they'd like to see. I think it's important for them to understand there are a lot of sub-disciplines in paddling and that many paddlers paddle across disciplines. Being able to track hours, miles, and personal best times for these different disciplines is important for training purposes.

Agree that paddle sports need their categories and also more metrics. garmin watched collect stroke rate and other very technical information.

Please consider Phil’s well spelled out argument for Paddle Sports. It would truly help us all!!
