Pairing screen, clearer information
I’ve answered multiple times now on Facebook and discord as to why ERG isn't working. I've even answered in person, a friend who said TPV is great but erg is rubbish.
It turns out all theses issues are from users pairing their trainer as smart trainer AND powermeter. This is understandable because coming from Zwift, this is what was required on that platform. Whereas on TPV the powermeter is only for secondary power source.
This issue crops up multiple times a week now on social platforms.
The solution would be a little bit of text or pop up message saying it is only required for secondary power source and not required for just a smart trainer.
Many thanks for your suggestion, and support for TrainingPeaks Virtual.
I'm delighted to say that this has now been implemented in the latest release (v0.4.9) which is out today. This release significantly reworks the pairing process to enable support for a wider range of devices and multi-user environments where there are many different devices all in the same room.
This should address the vast majority of the pairing issues previously experienced (including issues with ERG mode), but if there are any specific devices that TrainingPeaks Virtual still does not recognise, then please feel free to raise a new UserVoice suggestion for that specific device so we can investigate and add support for you.

hi @Rasmus Larsen. sorry if my comment was confusing. in the pairing screen the trainer should be paired as a trainer only. the system tries to pair it as a power meter as well. when in the pairing screen go to the section where it says "power meter" and select "unpair". hope that helps. Jon

@Jonathan Getz. Im confused now. The post you link to says, that the right way is to ONLY use the trainer, as trainer, and POWER should be external? From @Jamie Bishops comment the right way is to use the trainer as POWER. Neither way I dont get the result Im after. Frustrating.

I have my smart trainer paired as a trainer and my Garmin Pedals are paired for cadence & power. When I go from a hard interval to an easy one, ERG makes is incredibly hard to pedal on the easy interval. Even though I downshift to make it easier, ERG made me go to a complete stop on the easy interval after a Z5 interval, I have ERG release checked so it released eventually but this doesn't seem right so I have not been using the ERG feature.

OMG. I've had a few issues with ERG mode and had thought it was just teething problems with the software. I've just tried adjusting my pairing so the trainer is now only paired as a trainer and cadence sensor NOT AS A POWER METER. it defiantly helped and you (TPV) should find a way of ensuring users know about this, I only found out because I happened to be browsing the "ideas" page.

I had exactly the same issue and I added a comment couple of days ago under the similar discussion. But was postively surprised this morning doing training with short power intervals (20s in Z5 / 1m in Z2) and the switch of power was instant like with Zwift!

I'm using a Tacx Neo 2.
I've observed the ramp down to be ~2 seconds doing 5 minute intervals. Although it does feel like a long 2 seconds. It is just 2 seconds.
I prefer some amount of ramp down. I found MyWhoosh tends to just let the power go and this tends to cause problems for my knees. Zwift and TPV seems to be similar in the ~2 second ramp down.
If you are seeing 5 seconds of ramp down, an alternative might be to do 35/25s. -

A better solution yet would be for the system to just not allow the smart-trainer to be paired as the secondary source and for the popup to advise why.

I think your issue is because you have your stages as preferred so you have a trainer trying to be controlled but numbers coming from your powermeter. I'd try only pairing your Kickr and see how that goes, if you're desperate to have stage paired too, then have kickr set as preferred.
Smoothing is just the numbers on screen will not affect anything. Same as on a head unit on a bike.

I plan my training in TP, why I am trying TPVirtual as alternative to using Zwift. I would guess Im not the first:)
My setup is Kickr as trainer and Stages as external PM.
I primarily do structured WOs, and I have experienced the trainer resistance being slow. This is especially an issue when doing on/off intervals; eg. 40/20s.
When going from z5/6 power to z1/2, the release of resistance should come instantly and not smooth lowering of power over 4-5-6 seconds. Then I end up in the "death-spiral" in the last reps, unless i lower my target watt, which is not optimum.
Settings are:
Powermeter preferred; i use the stages.
Compatibility mode; this box have so far not been ticked - now I have ticked the box, and will see if there is any difference.
In the UI settings, I have the option to choose power smoothing; from none/instant up to 10 secs. Will this influence the trainer resistance, or only visuel difference?
Hope you can help me out, so I dont have to do my hard intervals in Zwift.
